Indigenous Peoples' Mobilizations in 3 Andean Countries
During the past months Indigenous Peoples in Latin America have
again occupied center stage in the struggle for democratic rights and
defense of national resources and autonomy. In Bolivia, Indian peoples
mobilized against the right attempts to overthrow President Evo Morales.
After a successful ten days uprising Amazonian Indigenous Peoples in Peru
force the government to overthrow laws privatizing communal lands and natural
reserves. In Colombia thousands of Indigenous Peoples marched over the capital
city of Bogota demanding respect for their territorial and democratic rights.
Panelist will offer an account of these events and examine, its impact on the overall
political situation and its relevance for the forge of an anti-systemic bloc of social and political forces.
