PERFORMANCE
Una Aya Osato
Recess is a play created from the experience of the author/performer, Una Aya Osato, attending and teaching in NYC public schools. It confronts the state of today's public school system where struggles for power, criminalization of the youth and the effects of a suffocating bureaucracy are an every day reality. The play also looks at the myriad of ways that prisons and policing specifically affect children in communities of color. After viewing the show there will be an interactive discussion that will incorporate acting/action. We will explore how we can take what we see and experience in the world and use theatre to create art of resistance.
Born and raised in NYC, Una Aya Osato is a performer, educator and babysitter. She is currently a teaching artist at numerous middle and high schools in NYC. Additionally she has been performing Recess, her second one woman show, and leading workshops on issues it raises at various theaters, classrooms, community organizations and college campuses around the country.
