LEFT TURN WINTER FORUM

Teaser:

Movement politics has always had a tricky relationship with the gods...

Description:

Movement politics has always had a tricky relationship with the gods--religious institutions are a primary engine of oppression and bigotry, and theological belief often justifies conservatism or diverts minds from worldly action. At the same time, religious organization and spiritual strength have proven vital against seemingly insurmountable enemies, from CIA counterinsurgency to Jim Crow terror.

We'll hear from inspiring activists doing dynamic work who intervene in collective religious spaces or are inspired by individual spiritual paths. We'll explore a landscape featuring secular, agnostic, and atheist activists engaging with the double-edged importance of religion; progressive Christians battling the religious right; Muslim organizers resisting Islamophobia and repression; anti-Zionist Jews fighting for a free Palestine; and a diverse array of liberation theologies and freedom dreams.

As issue #27 guest editors write: "We hope you will take this opportunity to reflect on your own relationship to sustainable radicalism, examine where your belief in freedom comes from, and imagine new connections and resources for your passionate movement practice."
